Dear Matterhorn Readers,
Thank you for being a part of this community! I’ve recently been experimenting with this project especially by adding a podcast, including discussion threads, and going deeper with themes for several weeks. On The Matterhorn homepage, you can now see sections to explore different parts of this online publication.
Part of my experimentations led me to decide to make all of my content free on these pages. One of the big reasons I’m doing this is that it’s difficult for me to gage who needs a comped account, and I imagine there are people out there who might not feel comfortable asking for one. I want anyone to be able to access the writing and community.
Since this work is all still ad-free, if you want to support the project, there is a payment option. This option helps to keep things accessible for many readers as I am a full time freelance writer. I am grateful if you can afford it, but I’m likewise grateful for all the subscribers here. You can even upgrade just for a month at any time to send me a $5 tip. This is a model that Dan Rather uses with Steady - explained well in the link - and several others are experimenting with.
Relatedly, sometimes I will need more time to devote to my fiction writing and a new platform about Yoga & Writing. This new model will allow me some freedom to do such. For example, this summer, I’ll be publishing a lighter Summer Travel series once a week with the “Saturday Brunch” (mostly) on pause.
Below, I’ve linked a few articles previously behind a paywall that you might like to check out.
Thanks very much for your support!
Best,
Kate
Hmm, interesting. I’m a fan of your approach--content is free, tips or recognition are appreciated--but I wonder if you could be more explicit about your proposed “pay for a month” model. I went to Steady and didn’t find that any more detailed. I’m one of those people who subscribe very widely, which means I pay for subscriptions very sparingly. I’d gladly pay, say, $100 for an all-you-can-eat subscription where the proceeds were spread among those I read most, but your model sounds similar, which the reader doing the distributing.
Thank you for this! I also love the layout.
