Dear Matterhorn readers,
It is the start of summer, and I couldn’t be more pleased than to go back to one of our favorite spots in Istria (a place I wrote about during last year’s summer travel series). I purposefully keep my roaming data allotment quite low and this place has very spotty wifi, so I will be mostly offline these two weeks. Apologies for not getting back to comments or messages sooner, but I look forward to checking them out eventually.
I wanted to share a couple of recent collaborations (below, including an article on Catcher in the Rye) and just catch us up to speed. I’m in the middle of serializing An Interpreter in Vienna and the accompanying biweekly podcast series on layering fiction. You can check out any episodes or chapters you missed on the Table of Contents. Thanks so much for your support with the project!
The nature of the current podcast is long-form, academically minded but more digestible discussions of fictional literature and its contexts, themes, and stylistic features with prompts at the end specifically for fiction writers. I’ll be shifting to shorter ten minute podcasts about literature and the arts as well as related articles and potentially interviews once this project reaches completion. That’s all I’ll say at this point! More updates coming in the autumn.
I hope you have a wonderful summer ahead. (Or winter, to those in the South.) We’ll also be moving to London and hitting up the Olympics in Paris for a couple of days. Hope to see some of you Londoners once I get settled in!
Best,
Collaborations
Recently,
published an article I wrote about The Catcher in the Rye and what the book means to me in (a great newsletter for bibliophiles!). The essay also goes into the subject of teaching literature. Hope you enjoy it!∞ My article on Catcher in the Rye (and teaching literature) - This Book Saved my Life
I’ve also had the pleasure of getting involved in a completely different kind of project through the work of fellow fiction writer
. He’s made something called StoryVerse, which is an interactive multiverse fictional ‘choose your own adventure’ housed on Substack.I was delighted when
invited me to create two nodes off of her part in this. My chapters include zombies, filmmaking, Hugh Grant 2.0, and a pink dumpster. I think it’s best if you start at the beginning. Each section is just a hundred words or so; it won’t take you long to try it out. Have fun!∞ Start at the beginning of StoryVerse here.
- recently featured me in an ongoing project linking running and creativity. Thanks for hosting me, Raziq!

Have a lovely time and getaway, Kathleen! So happy you got to participate in the StoryVerse - thanks so much!
Happy travels, Kate!
