Happy holidays, Kate. Enjoy getting lost in the New England woods (are there many forks in the paths through the woods, with roads not yet taken?)

Enjoy also the cold, you strange creature, you 😉 (I'm with you on the snow, though. There's something magical there, so long as I have a cosy cabin to return to.)

Ha thanks! I think the metaphorical cozy cabin is the necessity for enjoying winter. 🔥

So many mysterious bifurcations 😆 where shall I end up by 2024??

Happy Holidays to you!

Whichever path you take, it will be the correct one 😊🙏

Hi Karl! ☺️ Yes, I'm visiting family and would actually love to pop on here more...but helping out with a few things. All good and happy to hear from you! Hope you are having a good holiday as well.

Happy holidays to you and your family, Kate! How I miss spending the holidays in New England — I share your all-encompassing love of winter, so snow is a must at the end of December. Thank goodness I live in Minnesota now!

So glad Substack brought us into each other’s orbit this year. I’m excited to finally dive into A Hong Kong story over the break, and looking forward to whatever you have in store for us in the new year. 💙

We almost went to Minnesota to see my brother this time as well! He's meeting us here this time, but I'll have to get there again soon.

Likewise, Michael, I'm so happy to have connected with you here! And we had such a wonderful accidental connection through your work I picked up. Over the holidays I'll be perusing all your recommendations. I love learning about the music through your research and personal reflections on it. Be well and happy holidays 💜

Oh how wonderful that you have family in Minnesota as well! Fingers crossed we get to have a lakeside chat IRL one day. 💙

Hope you have a wonderful holiday too! I can relate with the snow-love but the cold... I'm pretty opposite to you in that regard.

Thanks for the great reads in 2023! Looking forward to what comes to the Matterhorn in 2024, have fun in New England. And if you have the chance, I recommend you visit the Berkshires in Western MA.

It's been ages since I went to the Berkshires! Great idea. Which part are you in? It must be very festive out that way. We are just 20 minutes from Boston, which also has it's more urban holiday charm!

Thanks a lot, Brian. Have a wonderful holiday!

I live in Lee, MA. And it is festive certainly with Norman Rockwell, some beautiful garden light shows, and the estate Naumkeag all within 10 minutes for me! But, in my opinion, if you want festive at the holidays, NYC is the only place to go, unbelievable in mid-town this year, its like being at the North Pole and it just dispels all myths about NYC (until January 2nd that is lol)! Im sure Boston will crush it as well though! Have fun, enjoy the holiday.

Haha yes I agree. That’s a good description of New York. Occasionally on my trips home I visit friends in NYC at this time of year and you are SO right. Iconic. I went to Lee maybe 15 years ago last?? So beautiful around there. Thanks for the great tips! Enjoy some Rockwell inspired days and eves ☺️

Thanks John! Currently on Hawthorne's House of Seven Gables. Forgot how elevating and surreal his prose can be. Just gorgeous.

Already looking forward to next year's Matterhorn. Enjoy the rest and the snow (you're not alone, my husband loves the cold and the snow too).

Thank you and Kate J for the link to the Guardian article. I did not know that Paul Auster was ill 😔. Wise and wonderful as always.

Poor Paul. He’s had a hard couple of years.
