I 'only' walked for a couple of years due to health reasons. I think you can get a lot of the same benefits! But maybe walking has a whole different artistic complex...I read something about French presidents & a culture of thinking-walking...can't remember where I saw this

That's one of the things I love about walking: I get a lot of ideas for my writing while doing it. Then again, I guess you can get the same results while running though I bet that stopping every 50 or 100 meters to take notes would be rather annoying.

Forgot to add!! In answer to your question of something which fulfils us as an alternative to running, mine is Yoga : ) It is the one thing where everything else falls away and I feel light and unselfconscious.

& "I am a yogi" also has so many connotations! Thanks for sharing all these ideas and for considering the questions. That sounds like a wonderful fulfilment you have with yoga. I also love it and mostly got into it once I started running less.

Such a fascinating read Kathleen! I am not a runner myself, but I find your theme of identity as a runner really interesting. I think we often label ourselves, as well as having labels imposed upon us, making it difficult to move away from a particular facet of our personalities at certain times which may not always serve us. Thought-provoking writing as always : )

Thank you for this thoughtful and informative piece! Very cool to hear about your personal experiences with running and coaching, though as you eloquently say, not all were positive. To me, running is a way to stay healthy and to connect with others, and to tire out my dog :)

That's great. I imagine that is very useful for a dog! That brings up something else; it's so lovely to write after a run because I find my body is tired out but not my brain. Does this happen to you?
