Forgot to add!! In answer to your question of something which fulfils us as an alternative to running, mine is Yoga : ) It is the one thing where everything else falls away and I feel light and unselfconscious.

Such a fascinating read Kathleen! I am not a runner myself, but I find your theme of identity as a runner really interesting. I think we often label ourselves, as well as having labels imposed upon us, making it difficult to move away from a particular facet of our personalities at certain times which may not always serve us. Thought-provoking writing as always : )

Thank you for this thoughtful and informative piece! Very cool to hear about your personal experiences with running and coaching, though as you eloquently say, not all were positive. To me, running is a way to stay healthy and to connect with others, and to tire out my dog :)
