My first explorations of jazz happened in my early 20s. My girlfriend at the time was really into jazz and we were living in London so we went to see lots of live gigs and explored different styles. It’s so varied, and the comparison with classical music is apt. Like classical music I only enjoy some of it. Really interesting post Kate, I’ve saved the Spotify list to listen to later (what a treat, love this idea!). Thanks for the shout out for The Gallery Companion!

Sounds like a fun exploration - especially in London! Live gigs have taken on a new meaning after the pandemic. I think there's at least one jazz club waiting for me in Basel, but we did have an open air jazz night last September that is probably when I got the idea to do this month's theme.

Happy to highlight such a great newsletter!

What a great post, thank you. I've loved jazz from a very young age, being partially raised by my Grandad in a house where it was pretty much always played. Wonderful!

Really enjoyed this post. I have only started to explore jazz in the last few years, I think because the kind of "jazz" popular when I was growing up was more pseudo-jazz elevator music. Listening to Coltrane especially has been a revelation. How wonderful that the idea came to him fully formed while meditating!

My husband plays jazz, guitar. Dedicated. I’ve always found the improvisation aspect of it highly impressive and such a beautiful thing to get to witness art being created and simultaneously performed right before my very eyes/ears.

A very enjoyable read. One of the things that has been on my to-be-written list is an article about how I discovered jazz, and what I love about it. I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested but your article has inspired me to push it nearer the top 😁
